[comp.protocols.appletalk] Yet another Mac E-mail question!

amosh@stl.stc.co.uk (02/07/90)

I have been following the postings on Quickmail with great interest, as
I am intending to set up a mail system for our Macs in the near future.

I would appreciate any help with the following questions:

My current configuration is

3 localtalk networks, each with a Fastpath 4 running K-Star so that the Macs
can use telnet & AUFS as well as communicate with Ethertalked Mac II's.
4 LaserWriters distributed across the networks.
Approx. 45 Macs
Numerous Suns on Ethernet, 2 of which are running CAP/AUFS and one running
Tops/Sun.
1 Mac file server running AppleShare II.

What I need to know is what hardware/software I need to integrate the Macs
with UNIX mail on the Suns so that some users may send/receive mail on their
Macs?

From what I have read, the best mail package is QuickMail, and to bridge
mail to the UNIX world, I need Mail Link*SMTP or a similar product.

What is Mail link*SMTP? Is it hardware or software or both? Are there
any good alternatives to this product, Gatormail/Q? Is Mail link hardware
or software, what does it run on? Do I need to buy a gateway for each
Localtalk net? Also, which servers will Quickmail run on, presumably
it will run concurrently on the AppleShare server, but we are short on
disk space. Will QM run on an AUFS server (including auto login) or a
Tops/Sun file server. The auto-connect is important as users do not want
the hassle of any manual connection to servers.

One final question, using these products is there any control over mailing
Mac format documents (eg. a MacDraw II document) to a user on a non-Mac host?
I can imagine this may cause problems.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
