Our department has finally decided to supply its graduate students a UNIX <->
Mac gateway. I'm one of the people who is to decided what we purchase. I've
read all of the relavent articles in comp.sys.mac and comp.protocols.appletalk
but still have a few general questions. I would *really* appreciate it if
those of you out there who are exprienced in this area would drop me a line.
I'm not an expert in networking (or anything else for that matter -)), so
please forgive any "simple" questions.
Here is what we want to do.
1). Allow both Macs and Suns to print to a LaserWriter connected to a Sun
workstation acting as a spooler (with accounting).
2). To allow the Suns to act as AppleShare fileservers.
3). Allow remote access of Suns from Macs (e.g. NCSA Telnet).
4). Allow UNIX <-> Mac mail (at some time in the future).
From what I've gathered there are a few options in implementing this.
1). A FastPath with uShare or CAP.
2). A GatorBox with GatorShare and GatorPrint, uShare, or CAP.
We had originally planned on a GatorBox but since Cayman unbundled their
software, it seems to be the most expensive solution (~$1800CAN for GatorShare
and ~$500CAN for GatorPrint).
In general, my question is: What is the best HW & SW solution to meet our
needs?
