I am trying to determine how to deliver TCP/IP services on the campus of Miami University to Macintosh networks. We will use PhoneNet to deliver Appletalk packets to Gatorboxes in places where we have Ethernet/TCP/IP points of presence. Our test network has been very stable, and suprisingly fast. We will use MacTCP to deliver TCP/IP services. At present we have NCSA Telnet, Brown tn3270, the hyperFTP stack and POPmail up and running with only the usual aggrivations. My question concerns configuration of MacTCP for users. If we use the control pannel interface to define the nameserver, all of the above services work well. If I use the Hosts file approach, only NCSA Telnet utilizes the information in the Hosts file. All of the other applications fail to obtain name service. If I add name service to the Control Pannel, all applications work well, but only NCSA Telnet can avail itself of CNAME entries. Can anyone point me in a useful direction? P.S. Thanks for theMSS segsize patch to MacTCP. It works well.
