For some time statisticians at various sites (Berkeley, Stanford Washington, Wisconsin and Bell) have been exchanging information over the various networks. We have been doing this using mail, but as the group has grown this has gotten cumbersome, hence Steve's proposal. The point is that there is a ready-made and fairly large group of statisticians who would like to use this forum to communicate with other statisticians and also make their experience available to others who might be interested. On the basis of my (relatively short) experience with netnews I would say that the statistics group will be far more active than net.math. For this reason we would like to have our own group and we would like it to be called net.stat. Ross Ihaka ihaka@ucbbach@berkeley Statistics Department ucbvax!ucbbach.ihaka U.C. Activity does not make a top group, unrelated topics do. Statistics are highly related to mathematics, so net.math.stat is appropriate. It wouldn't matter if net.math only got one article and net.math.stat got 1000 in the same time period.

My apologies for not posting this as a followup. I'm taking a respite from hacking inews, and have apparently broken something. I'll look into it soon. Anyhow, here's the text of the message - >> >> Due to the number of people interested in this group, I have >> seen fit to create it. As usual, use it or lose it... >> >> -- >> Brian A. Ehrmantraut >> >> {ihnp4, decvax, ucbvax}!allegra!fisher!bae Ok, now that it has been created, can we zap net.usoft? We haven't had any traffic on this in aeons. I will wait 2 weeks for any violent argument, and will send out the rmgroup message if no one else beats me to it (feel free).
