[comp.protocols.appletalk] folders don't get through Gator Box to NFS Appleshare volume

king@uw-entropy.ms.washington.edu (Jim King) (02/21/90)

We have recently installed a Gator box linking our PhoneNet Appletalk
network to a system of Vaxes running Ultrix. A Unix directory has
been set up to look like an Appleshare volume to the Mac side of the
gateway, and it is possible to move files to and from this directory.

The problem is that only individual files can be copied to the
Appleshare volume; if one tries to copy folders with their contents,
it does not copy.

I assume this is not how this is supposed to work. It would be very
helpful to learn what is going wrong and how to fix it. Any
suggestions would be welcome.

There was an earlier, quite probably related, problem with printing
using CAP through the Gator box. Somehow 8-bit characters were coming
through that were not interpreted properly, so that a Mac character
from the upper ASCII range (like a bullet or a "not equals" would be
stripped of a bit and printed as something else. Our system
administrator says that something similar is happening with the
folders, there are 8-bit characters that cannot be handled on the Unix
end. (The printing was solved by turning on some 8-bit switch in the
CAP software (or I think this was how)).

Thanks for any help you can send. I will summarize replies and post
them to the net.
