I want to provide an email gateway through an AT&T 3b1 (pc7300, unixpc) for a group of macs that are connected via appletalk. I would appreciate your comments as to whether this is doable and, if it is, what hardware/software do I need to purchase. Thanks in advance. Bob O'Brien

I don't know whether it'll run on a 3B1, but something you might look into (which is also Public Domain) is running a POP server. There are several PD or freely distributable packages available (for non-commercial use). We currently have a POP3 server running on an HP9000-840 (SysV variation known as HP-UX) and POP3 & POP2 servers running on a SUN 4/280 (SunOS 4). The POP3 package is anonymous FTPable and comes from "lilac.berkeley.edu". It includes a Hypercard Mac client (HyperMail) which allows a Mac (with an TCP/IP connection to a UNIX system (either with an ethernet card or via something like a Kinetics box thru LocalTalk), MacTCP (from Apple), and at least 2Mb of memory) to get and send e-mail transparently via the UNIX server. Whether the server software will work on a 7300, I don't really know (although it would probably be possible to port). ========================================================================== Bob DeBula | Internet: bobd@hpuxa.ircc.ohio-state.edu The Ohio State University | Disclaimer: These are my views, not the U's Davros sez: When my Daleks compute they use X-TER-MI-NALS!
