I don't know if this is relevant to the current discussion or not, but I recently encountered a very strange phenomenon whereby Appleshare was being accessed when certain programs (e.g. Bundaid 1.1 and Disinfectant 1.6) were doing a scan of my *local* hard disk! If no server volume was mounted, then no arrow flashing occurred; however, starting an application with a server volume mounted, then disconnecting the Localtalk connection while the application was working resulted in the application halting until the Appletalk connection was restored. After much experimentation, I determined that the program that seemed to be causing this was GateKeeper Aid!!!! Removing this INIT and replacing it with Eradicat'em seems to have cured the problem.
