I have been trying to FTP to it (at 128.174.25.50) many times over the last
several weeks, but it never responded. Prior to that I had connected to it
successfully on numerous occasions and don't reacall any instance of it not
responding.

Also, I used to receive the NCSA Telnet news bulletin every once in a while,
not very regularly, but quite frequently. However, I did not received a
bulletin for several months now.

We are particularly eager to get a release version of NCSA Telnet 2.3 for
the PC. The Beta I downloaded last does not work.

Does anyone know whether they have gone out of the "business" of providing
free software? That would be a tremendous loss! Has 2.3 for the PC ever
been released? If so, is there an alternate host from which it can be
FTPed?

Certainly they are still there. The problem is that you have the IP number
wrong. It's 128.174.20.50 at zaphod. Is this what they call in the business
a "probable user error"?

Just so the NCSA people know, here is the info I get from the domain name
system:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
% host zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu
Name: ZAPHOD.NCSA.UIUC.EDU
Address(es): 128.174.20.50 128.174.25.50
CPU: SUN-3/160S
OS: UNIX
MX: zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu;0 newton.ncsa.uiuc.edu;100 uxc.cso.uiuc.edu;500

% host ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu
Name: zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu FTP.NCSA.UIUC.EDU
Address(es): 128.174.20.50 128.174.25.50
CPU: SUN-3/160S
OS: UNIX
MX: zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu;0 newton.ncsa.uiuc.edu;100 uxc.cso.uiuc.edu;500
Services for 128.174.20.50: udp/echo udp/tftp tcp/ftp tcp/telnet tcp/smtp
Services for 128.174.25.50: udp/echo udp/tftp tcp/ftp tcp/telnet tcp/smtp

----------------------------------------------------------------------

This implies that either (a) the domain server for ncsa.uiuc.edu is wrong,
or (b) the second IP interface (128.174.25.50) is down. I can ping
128.174.20.50, but not 128.174.25.50.

Is this what they call in the business a "probable network error"?

:-)
