[comp.protocols.appletalk] Name resolution failure in SU-MacIP V3.0..

lim@cwlim.INS.CWRU.Edu (Hock-Koon Lim) (03/20/90)

I have experience problem on the SU-Mac/IP V3.0. Here is the problem:

  -- startup su-macip v3.0
-- ip address get assigned by bootp server, no problem so far.
  -- Start telnet,
-- Select a host from the host table window.

-- ERROR message show up instantly : Internal Failure in name
	resolution attempt.

I put the Sniffer on the cable to look for package coming out from the
mac. I can see the bootp address assignment packages. The mac get the
address assignment. Start telnet and select a host, I did NOT see a
single packet coming out from the mac at all and the ERROR show up.

I have experience this problem long ago. The first attempt don't
alway success, but if I try the second time, the telnet will get through.
Now the problem become worst. Sometime I got it through after many many
attempts, and most of the time it just don't work.

If I use the IP number format, it will get through without problem.
So the problem is the name resolution routines in su-macip. All other
macs using the software are experienced the same problem here.

If I put a sniffer and the mac(with static IP address) on a private
cable - no other traffic. I startup telnet to a host, I can see packet
come out from the mac everytime about arp request for the nameserver.
It seems to me that some other traffic on the network is causing this problem.
The problem occur in many different macs (SE, SE30, IIcx, IIx)
with different Ethernet cards.

A lot of utilities for mac are running on the network lately. Software like
Public Folder, broadcast, netmap etc. Do you thing any one of these might
 cause the problem?

Is anyone has the same problem out there?

Thanks,
