[comp.protocols.appletalk] real-world usability of CAP

dyer@spdcc.COM (Steve Dyer) (06/08/90)

I'm just beginning to evaluate ethernet-based CAP (either with a
Fastpath box or a UAB server) as a potential low-cost file server for a
group which does a fair amount of Mac development and will be acquiring
a number of Suns (3/60's and Sparcs) which could be used as servers.
In my admittedly limited recent experience with the most recent CAP
from Rutgers and using a Fastpath box, I find the AUFS file server
software both a bit slow and also rather unreliable (using an RT as the
server.) Large transfers, for example, appear to hang up the MacIIci
I'm using as the Appleshare client. Maybe this reflects an incomplete
configuration of my server; I don't know.

Now, I'm not trying to tar anyone's opinion of AUFS or CAP in general,
but I'd like to get a sense out there whether this has proven to be a
truly useful tool or simply a curiosity. I would be happy to find out
that my experience is based on some fixable problem on my end.
However, at this point I can't tell. Success stories would go a long
way towards increasing my confidence in recommending this particular
solution. Also, what kind of technical support does this kind of
solution demand?

Thanks in advance,
