[comp.protocols.appletalk] TCP/IP - Macro Feature?

johnj@welch.jhu.edu (John A. Johnston) (06/28/90)

Does anyone know if there is a TCP/IP software package that has Macro
capabilities? Currently we are using Host Access by Kinetics (At least
it was Kinetics before Shiva took over the Fastpath product) and it has
no macro capability and no printing feature. Our users are being
switched from Serial interface connections to TCP/IP ethernet access.
They are used to packages like Red Ryder, Smartcomm, etc. which have
all these nice features.

If anyone knows of a product or has any ideas, please e-mail:
steveb@welch.jhu.edu, not me!.

Thanks in advance.

There are currently only four commercial TCP/IP packages for the Mac that
I know of.

Kinetics/Novell - HostAccess
Ungermann Bass - UWS
InterCon Systems - TCP/Connect II
Wollongong Group - MacPathWay Access

Out of those four the only one that I have heard has any Macro capability
is UB's UWS. I personally have not seen it work (anyone at UB wanna trade
a copy or TCP/Connect II for a copy of UWS?), but I have been told that it
will do macros.

TCP/Connect II allows users to reprogram function keys and print from the
screen, so does MacPathWay Access.

There is another product that might do what you want. InterCon Telnet Driver,
which allows VersaTerm Pro and MicroPhone II net access. In conjunction
with MicroPhone II you would have excellent scripting capabilities.

All of these use MacTCP. Hope this helps, if you need anymore information
feel free to drop me a line.

Of course. The freeware (but extensively tested) TOPS Terminal and
TOPS TCP/IP package has a scripting language, usable for structured
operations (login, etc.) and unstructured operations (macros). If
your local BBS's don't have TOPS Terminal 1.3, ask 'em why not!

I saw a MacTCP-based telnet with macro capabilities in some literature
announcing the Ungermann-Bass MaxTalk AT router product, but I don't have
a copy [hint, hint] so I can't comment on how well it works.

Do you mean that it allows a press of a function key to perform several
functions (i.e. send a string of chars as if typed)? I didn't see any
mention of this in the TCP/Connect II manual...

Erg, Sorry about that I keep forgetting about TOPS Terminal (No it's not
a conspiracy, sigh). I will make a note of this for the future.

Yes. Why it isn't in the manual I don't know and will make sure that we
document it. Hope that helps.
