[comp.protocols.appletalk] Linking remote AppleTalk LANs via TCP/IP

perl@pbseps.PacBell.COM (Richard Perlman) (07/14/90)

We are on the verge of linking two separate AppleTalk LANs and
have a few questions. First the facts...

LAN 1 has a UNIX (Sequent) host running CAP and a FastPath4
running KSTAR v.7. The LocalTalk, EtherTalk and Ethernet
segments are all in one logical zone. Macs are on both
	LocalTalk and EtherTalk.

LAN 2 has a SUN running UAB, and several FastPath4s on an
Ethernet backbone, each with it's own LocalTalk zone. The
Fastpaths are NOT running KSTAR. The Ethernet backbone
appears as an independent zone. There are also some Macs
	directly on the Ethernet.

The two Ethernets are linked through a pair of routers
(which will not route AppleTalk). All Ethernets are in
the same class "C" ethernet, but are different subnets.

Now... How do we "link-it-all-up?" Our basic idea is to run
KSTAR on one of the LAN2 FastPaths, but we are unsure of which
UNIX machine to use as it's host, since the "local" SUN is
running UAB.

Comments, suggestions, welcome... PLEASE
