I just had a conversation with a tech. support person at AlisaShare (vendor of AppleShare servers for VMS systems) and was told the reason why it takes so long to display the list of volumes in a server from my Mac's chooser dialog box to due to the AppleShare Fileserver Protocol. I'm aware of an actual limitation on the number of volumes a single server can support (it's a strange restriction in that you total the number of characters in all the volume names; it's not a function of the number of volumes). But, I've never heard of a performance issue concerning the number of volumes and/or the total number of volume name characters. Can anyone provide some insight on this problem? FYI: The server in question services 40 volumes. Currently, noone is using the server. It typically takes 4-5 minutes before the chooser can display the list of volumes known by the AlisaShare server. The VAX system itself is not heavily used either ( < 40% cpu utilization/avg.).
