With regards backing up appleshare file servers. I looked at 3 packages: The Macintosh bundled s/w with their SC40 tape hardware, FastbackII Retrospect. 1. the Macintosh s/w will backup file privileges BUT apart from that is VERY basic. Wont backup over the network. 2. FastbackII. Does incrementals. Easy to use. Backs up in Mac format. DOES NOT backup Appleshare File Privileges. Backs up to floppy and tape. 3. Retrospect. This is a true archiving package and DOES backup Appleshare File Privileges. High functionality. Allows incrementals, scripts, choosing files by type, date, color, name, path etc etc with and,or,not qualifiers. Also backs up over network, while file server is running, reporting locked files. A big plus is that you can have it run whilst you are away at any time of the day on a regular basis or just once if you want it to backup overnight. Backs up to file, floppy and tape. Uses own format. Complex to learn but worth the trouble.
