[comp.protocols.appletalk] Appleshare on Ethernet

USERLSF@MTSG.UBC.CA (07/31/90)

I'm doing some research into Macintosh network configurations for a
teaching lab and am looking to find the best performing network
hardware and software combination.

We are considering a network composed of Mac IIcx machines and an
SE/30 or IIcx server using 3com or Apple ethernet boards and
Appleshare server and client software.

I know that it takes about 5-8 minutes for 20-25 machines to launch
the same copy of one fairly large program at the same time off an
Appleshare server using LocalTalk or PhoneNet cabling. What I would
like to know is, if ethernet were used, would this launch time be
significantly reduced?

I can certainly speculate on this, but I'd like to hear from someone
who has actual experience with this kind of situation.
