[comp.protocols.appletalk] AppleTalk Phase 1 driver for 3comm boards.

Beattie@SYSTEM-M.PHX.BULL.COM ("Art Beattie {AC602 862-4783}") (08/10/90)

We have a couple of 3com 3C503 boards installed and our network is still
Phase 1 for now. However, we cannot locate the software driver for the
3comm board that supports AppleTalkk Phase 1. We have the software for
Phase 2.

Could anyone help in locating a copy of the required software? I can
probably FTP from any site (except the MIL net ;-) or will send whatever
(money, disks, etc) to facilitate a transfer.

Thanks.

I seem to recall having some moderate success with some version of TOPS which
ran on some Ethernet boards (probably 3C503) and did AppleTalk Phase I. I
think I was able to print to a LaserWriter across a FastPath, for example. I
also remember that the software took a lot of RAM and therefore wasn't too
useful for most users.

Apple specifically doesn't have a Phase I driver for PCs. In case anyone
hasn't got the picture yet, Apple would like to see Phase I disappear as
quickly as possible. Certainly they encourage anyone doing any AppleTalk
implementation to do Phase II and not bother with Phase I. (Apple people,
please correct me if I'm mis-stating this.)

You might want to consider putting up Phase II/Phase I transition software in
your routers (if possible), and running your PCs with Phase II, rather than
investing a lot of time finding Phase I for them.
