Help! While I'm a very experienced Unix and Macintosh programmer, I have very little knowledge regarding CAP, KIP and related software. I'm hoping that some kind soul might take a moment or two to get me pointed in the right direction. Where I work, we run ULTRIX. We have a fair number of Macintoshes networked together via AppleTalk/PhoneNet. They are gatewayed to the VAXes via a Cayman GatorBox. GatorShare software is used to give the Macs NFS access to the VAXes. Now for the problem. Anyone who has used the VAX filesystems from the Macs for anything other than copying files to their local hard disk complains that the GatorBox is too slow. This doesn't particularly surprise me. I'm sure that doing NFS<->AFP translation isn't exactly a breeze. Now here's my question. Would CAP be a realistic alternative? Running an implementation of AFP on the VAXes (which is what CAP is, right?) must be faster than doing a NFS<->AFP translation, right? Is there anyone out there that can 1) tell me if CAP under ULTRIX (via the GatorBox) will give me better performance than GatorShare, and 2) where can I get CAP without FTP access? Also, if anyone has any advice on running CAP under ULTRIX and what it takes to get CAP compiled under ULTRIX, I would appreciate it. Thanks! Jay O'Conor jay@maspar.com
