Hello Folks, I am involved in an experiment know as WAAN (wide area appletalk network, of course :-) .) We have been using KIP and GatorBox tunneling between Penn State, Rochester, Princeton, NyserNet, Rutgers. With the different options becoming available, and with an IPTalk standard being created, there seems to be some confusion on the best ways to implement wide area appletalk networks. I would like to write up a 'How To' guide, including KIP and GatorBox connections, problems I (an others in waan) have come across, trouble shooting techniques, coordination of network numbers, etc... I think it would be very useful to the macintosh network community. I know there are other ways to connect, and there are several WAAN's across the globe. It would be nice to take this knowledge, and make a useful document for the beginner (or the advanced network admin who is having 'one of those days.') Any war stories, opinions, suggestions, help, etc... would be appreciated. Info from those using devices other then KIP, GatorBoxes, Ciscos, would be very useful. A note of support saying this a good thing to do would help, also. Hi Again, Response has been very good. There seems to be alot of people who are looking for an 'How To' on wide area AppleTalk networking. I have received notes from a few people who have told me about their configs... anyone else who has info, please mail. One section I plan to write about are tools to monitor networks. I am using SNMP and several scripts to watch my networks. Most of it is awk and sed scripts, which I am converting to perl. Anyone having other such applications, please forward source, and I will include that also. (Please do not ask for what I have right now, I really would like to clean up the code before I give it to anyone.) Any raw scripts are fine, they don't have to be fancy. Applications for non-unix or non-ip sites would be very useful. (All my stuff requires ip) If anyone has done any preformance tests, that info would be very helpful. As would unique applications for WAANs. (What are other people doing with WAANs?)
