[comp.protocols.appletalk] Ethernet to LocalTalk via AppleShare PC

jkyte@macadam.mqcs.mq.oz.au (John Kyte) (08/29/90)

Information Requested - APPLESHARE PC software.

We have a LocalTalk Mac network, with server Vers 2 software (is
this the same as "Phase 2" ?), LaserWriters, and a WEBSTER MULTI-
GATE to Ethernet. On Ethernet we have, amongst other things, IBM-
PCs. We want to provide our PCs on Ethernet with access to the
LaserWriters on LocalTalk. We don't want to transfer the PCs to
LocalTalk and use an APPLESHARE PC Card.

APPLESHARE PC software driving a 3Comm Etherlink II card is
claimed to provide the required facility. The
software loads and seems to configure OK, but cannot see or
access any LocalTalk facilities, nor can it see our Novell "Net-
ware for Macintosh" server on Ethernet. The MULTIGATE seems to be
doing the right things - from the LocalTalk side our Macs can
Telnet to Unix systems, see Netware for Mac server etc. If we put
a Mac II with EtherTalk NB card on the ethernet only, everythin-
g's fine : it can see the LocalTalk server and Laserwriters.

Why won't the AppleShare PC/3Comm Etherlink II work ?? ---- any
suggestions as to where we're going wrong would be greatly appre-
ciated, as would information on alternative solutions.

First: No, AppleShare server 2.0.x is not the same as AppleTalk Phase 2.

I'm sure your problem is an AppleTalk Phase 1 versus AppleTalk Phase 2 problem.

AppleShare PC 2.0.x is AppleTalk Phase 2. If the Webster MULTIGATE is not
Phase 2, ASPC will not see it. Have you upgraded your Novell Server to Phase
2 yet?

I'd bet the reason the Mac II works is that it is running EtherTalk 1.0 which
uses Appletalk phase 1 protocols instead of Phase 2.

If you were to upgrade the Mac II to EtherTalk 2.0, then it would also
'become blind' to the other Phase 1 devices (The MULTIGATE and Novell Server).

The long-term solution is to upgrade your Ethernet devices to Phase 2.
You can resist for a while, but new Apple products will require a Phase 2
network.

Remember that for non-router nodes on LocalTalk there is no difference
between Phase 1 and 2. -- The only difference is on EtherTalk.

Apple's marketing group has a neat brochure that outlines the differences
between 1 and 2 and the various migration and upgrade paths available.
