Someone please help!!!
At the department of Computer Science at Liverpool University we have *loads*
of HP workstations, 1 Apple LaserWriter, and 7 Macs of differing varieties. We
have a Fastpath 4 (PROM 3.1, Rev COX5), which we would like to use to allow us
to use one of our workstations as a file-server for the Macs. After *much*
messing about, and reading and re-reading of the documentation, I have only
managed to get Telnet/ftp to work through the kbox. I cannot get the CAP stuff
(Aufs etc.) to work properly at all. I can see devices on the LocalTalk side
from the Un*x box, but I cannot see stuff the other way. The configuration is
as follows:
atalkatab:
# this group shows a kbox and the IP ether it sits on.
42.0 N1 138.253.42.0 Appletalk2 #Spock, appletalk-in-IP
42.1 KC 138.253.42.220 Appletalk1 #Spock, localtalk
I138.253.42.255 L0 #ipbroad ipname
I138.253.42.52 L0 #ipdebug ipfile
L0 L0 L0 L0 S0 S0 #ipother atnetet ddprangestart
LX0 S5 S7 #flags ipstatic ipdynamic
S42.1 S42.0 #atneta atnete
atalk.local:
# mynet mynode myzone
42.0 52 Appletalk2
# bridgenet bridgenode bridgeIP
42.0 220 138.253.42.220
I reset the Kbox, download gw.srec and then load a configuration file into it,
which looks like this:
* Config file for KFPS, KIP version, 10/86.
<.....>
* These bytes are ignored but must be left as placeholders:
0000 0000 FF FF FF 00 000000 000000
* Gateway name (in this example, "Spock")
53706F636B00000000000000000000000000000000
* File name (in this example, "gw.srec"):
67772E737265630000000000000000000000000000
* reserved (this field should be 00FF):
00FF
*
* Start of 'mandatory' parameters, the minimum information that
* must be supplied for the gateway to begin operation.
*
* IP address of myself, 'ipaddr'
* 138.253.42.220
8afd2adc
* IP addr of admin host
* 138.253.42.52 (Dingle 12)
8afd2a34
* IP addr of default route (nearest 'real' gateway)
* there isn't one!
00000000
* ethernet hardware addr of KFPS;
* 080089 is the Kinetics manufacturer code,
* remaining bytes are the serial number of your box.
080089 A02745
* next value is a flag, if it is '1234' the remainder
* of this file is considered valid; any other value means
* that the remaining parameters will be obtained from atalkad.
0000
When I "go" the box, I get a message saying that KIP lives, and I can then use
NCSA telnet/ftp through the box. The problem is that I cannot seem to see any
devices on the Unix side from the LocalTalk side. Has anybody any pointers to
what I am doing wrongly? Would you like to have my gratitude for *ever*?
If you can help then please reply to me at the address below. If I get any
responses I can attempt to summarise them here.
