[comp.protocols.appletalk] slip

ferrante@aaec1.UUCP (Rich Ferrante) (09/29/90)

I need to connect a MAC to a UNIX box over a noisy line. Does
anyone know of either a SLIP implementation for the MAC or some other
error tolerant protocol interface to the serial ports?

NCSA telnet won't work, because the MAC will be transmitting the output
from a program, not interactions with a user.

Well, there is a version of NCSA Telnet which contains an implementation
of SLIP from Cisco. Also, there is TCP/Connect II which contains SLIP.

What you really need is a SLIP for MacTCP, I don't know of any off hand.
Though I do know of some people working on it. You might also want to just
look into getting two Telebit modems? They would take care of the errors
for you, I believe.

Hope that helps.

There are several uucp implementations available on the Mac. I wouldn't know
how robust uucp "g" is under noisy line conditions, but maybe you should just
get some MNP or Telebit modems?

One such shareware uucp implementation was written by Jim O Dell, and you can
contact him at jim@fpr.com.

hope this helps,

InterCon's TCP/Connect II supports telnet, FTP client and server, NNTP
reader, and, I think(?), SMTP sender over SLIP. cisco systems modified
NCSA Telnet 2.3 for slip as an unsupported contribution to NCSA. Apple
say's next MacTCP version will make it easier to support SLIP, which isn't
the same as saying it will allow applications built to sit on top of it to
automatically become SLIP supporting. :^)

And finally for you HAM radio types, there's a version of KA9Q for the Mac out there (somewhere) :^) which supports SLIP as well.
