[comp.protocols.appletalk] Appletalk hardware/software for SCO Unix or VP/ix?

brb@falcon.is (Bjorn R. Bjornsson) (10/17/90)

Does anyone know of hardware/software to do appletalk on a
386 PC with SCO Unix? Also what appletalk cards/drivers for
DOS machines are WITHOUT DMA? The latter could possibly be
installed as DDA devices under VP/ix 1.2!!

The above would be used for occasional PostScript downloads to
a Linotron RIP-2.

Thanks,

Please don't consider this an official response from SCO,
it is just my personal experience. I've got Open Desktop
(which combines SCO UNIX with X Windows, networking, DOS
Merge, and database) installed on my home 386 with an Apple
LocalTalk card. Using the ODT-DOS component (Merge), I was
able to specify the correct data parameters, *including the
DMA channel*. I use the DOS LocalTalk software under
ODT-DOS to transmit files, and it allows me to issue the
command from UNIX. I put the command in a UNIX printer
interface script, so now I can lp over the appletalk
network. It is much swifter than the old serial line.

I realize that Open Desktop may be more than you need for
your particular request, but it did work. And, no, you
cannot just buy the DOS merge component to add to your SCO
Unix.
