[comp.protocols.appletalk] Error in TOPS??

fc156111@seas.gwu.edu (Timothy A. Waire Jr.) (10/17/90)

Our network consist of 40 Macs interconnected on EtherTalk & LocalTalk. The
problem we are having is with 3 SE/30's. Everytime they start up and TOPS
attempts to load, the following message appears:

           -54: Error in .TOPS Module.

Or something of the like. From then on TOPS is not usable (ie. it never loaded)
We have tried replacing TOPS, the System, etc. but to no avail. TOPS technical
supporthas been no help.

Furthermore, we attempted to try thi with a virgin system. I mean we installed
TOPS on a previously locked system disk and booted with it. The error message
still appeared. This leads us to believe that the problem is in the SE/30
hardware. We sent the computers to Falcon MicroSystems and they said they
could not find any problems. They did however replace one logic board for us
and now that Mac mysteriously works fine.

Any suggestions? Please HELP!

Well, the error means "Attempt to open locked file for writing". If
you have any mac programmers there, they should be able to use MacsBug
or TMON to tell which file is causing the error. You can then unlock
the file. Also, of course, look through your system folder and especially
your TOPS files looking for locked files and unlocking them.
