[comp.protocols.appletalk] Interesting Appletalk behavior - any hints?

dan@s3sol.scubed (Dan Peterka) (10/28/90)

I've got a frustrating problem on my hands with Appletalk, CAP, and
Fastpath 4's and IP routers. My setup is as follows:

          Main Ethernet Remote Ethernet
 ============================               ===============================
     | .__|__. .__|__. .__|__. .__|__. .__|__.
     | | | | IP | 56kb | IP | | Sun | | |
     | | FP4 | |router-------------------|router | aufs| | FP4 |
     | |__1__| |_____|	serial link |_____| |__4__| |__2__|
  .__|__. | |
  | Sun | | .___________. ._______|___.
  | aufs| |_____| Mac net 1 | | Mac Net 2 |
  |__1__| |___________| |___________|
     | Sun Ethernet
 =================
   .__|__. .__|__.
   | Sun | | Sun |
   | aufs| | aufs|
   |__2__| |__3__|

Now, here's my problem:

Macs in Mac net 1 can see everything they need to see in the main network
(printers, aufs servers, etc...). Likewise, Macs in Mac Net 2 can see
everthing they need to see on the remote ethernet. Now for the weird
part.

Macs in either net cannot see the aufs servers on the two serially
connected ethernets! They can see printers on each end, zone info
comes across, but no aufs servers. This is also noticeable using
atlook on Sun 1 and Sun 4 when looking at zones on their opposing
ends. The macs on the remote network (Mac Net 2) CAN, however, see the
aufs servers on the Sun Ethernet one hop off the main ethernet ( Suns
2 and 3 in the diagram).

All Fastpaths are running K-Star 7.0 with only the broadcast option
(4) set. Preffered IP routers are set to point at the IP routers
(cisco boxes). All Suns are running CAP 50 software and are a mixture
of Sun 3's running SunOS3.4 and Sun Sparc machines running SunOS4.1
and 4.0.3. The SunOS versions don't seem to have any bearing on what
is visible and what is not.

I have tried changed the packet repeat parameters for aufs (options -R
and -S) to no avail, and I have tried several switch settings on the
FP4's. Any hints would be appreciated...

Dazed and Confused...
