The Computer Aided Design / Interactive Graphics group at the U. S.
Naval Academy has a position open for a GS-9/11 computer specialist.
The purpose of the department is to apply computer graphics and
CAD/CAM techniques to Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical and Naval Sys-
tems Engineering. The graphics hardware consists of:
Evans and Sutherland Picture System 1 on a PDP-11/45 running RT-11
Evans and Sutherland Picture System 1 on a PDP-11/34 running RT-11
Evans and Sutherland PS300 with 4 displays on a PDP-11/55 running
UNIX V7
Ikonas color frame buffer on a PDP-11/55 running UNIX V7
Various Tektronix gear (4050 series desktops and 4014 terminals)
An 85 x 55 inch flatbed plotter
A VAX 11/780 and Berkley 4.X will be installed in August. Two addi-
tional PS300 systems will be purchased in early 1984. Projects
currently under way include Ethernet between UNIX machines, printed
circuit and schematic drafting systems on the PS300, 2D and 3D mechan-
ical part drafting with direct milling machine control, ship hull
design using 3D surfaces, and computer graphics research for engineer-
ing applications.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of computer graphics is required. The
software responsibilities are approximately as follows:
70% UNIX program development
15% Naval Academy Time Sharing system support
10% RT11 support
5% Tektronix 4050 support
Languages include Fortran IV, f77, C and BASIC. The position also
requires working with faculty members and students to provide program-
ming assistance. This assistance ranges from simply answering ques-
tions to developing major programming projects applying interactive
graphics to engineering problems.
The job is a full time civil service position. The department is all
civilian consisting of a faculty director, two electronics engineers,
an electronics technician, and two computer specialists. This posi-
tion is to fill an additional vacant software position. The salary is
from $20k to $24.5k.

The Hydromechanics Laboratory at the U. S. Naval Academy has a posi-
tion open for a GS-11/12 electronics engineer. This position requires
experience in the design and assembly of special purpose instrumenta-
tion systems utilized in a $12M experimental laboratory. A background
in digital electronics and related computer software long with the
ability to interface instrumentation packages to PDP-11 systems is
desirable.
The job an is a full time civil service position with a salary range
of $27K to $38K. The laboratory staff is civillian and services both
the academic and research communities.
