[comp.protocols.appletalk] NCSA-Telnet

momma@is.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de (Stefan Momma) (11/14/90)

Apologies, if this is a FAQ (is there a list of FAQs available for
this group ?)

We have a network of Macs, PCs and Suns, where CAP/UAB is used for
accessing Appletalk-only devices such as the Laserwriters from
machines that access the net through Ethernet cards. The CAP/UAB
server is a Sun4 (but I don't think this matters for the problem we
have).

I am now trying to install the PC version of NCSA Telnet that supports
Appletalk (appletlk.zip from the directory NCSA_Telnet/contributions
on zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu) on a PC we inherited which is in the unlucky
position not to have an Ethernet card, but "only" a Localtalk/PC
board. When trying to use the Telnet program (with all the Appletalk
drivers installed, of course), the program says it can't initialize
the hardware level network drivers and exits.

I RTFM of both NCSA-Telnet and the Localtalk/PC installation
procedure, and was (was I?) able to pin the problem down to the
question what the correct setting in the config.tel file for the
parameters "ioaddr", "address" and "interrupt" would be.

It also seems to interfer with the way the Localtalk/PC card is
installed, i.e. whether it is installed in "polled" mode or using
interrupts (and then: which ones ?)

Does someone out there use NCSA-Telnet across Appletalk and CAP/UAB
and if yes, how is your Localtalk/PC card installed and what are your
settings in the config.tel file (A sample file would be just fine)

Thanks a lot for your help in advance
