We are implementing a large AppleTalk network using phonet to wire up each individual building in the campus. We intend to find some way of connecting these small subnet to a thin Ethernet which in turn joined into a FDDI backbone The following show the ideal config. /-----\ . || . /-----\ Mac 1 ---------| | . || | |----- Mac 1 Mac 2 ---------| | ?#1 /-----\ . | |----- Mac 2 . . | |/\/\/\========/ FDDI \======/\/\/\| | . . . . | | thin \ Ring / | | . . Mac N ---------| | Ethernet \-----/ | |----- Mac N \-----/ . || . \-----/ phonet star controller . || . series 300 The connection between the FDDI and the thin Ethernet is through a Router that support AppleTalk routing. The question here is : 1. How can I connect up a star controller to the thin Ethernet without using a router e.g. FastPath. It is too expansive. Further, we need to have both appletalk and IP traffic on the phonet. 2. How to cascade two star controller without increasing the repeater count. We are also think of using the standard AppleShare server software from Apple running on the high end Mac series. Can somebody comment on the disadvantage/advantage of this choice ? We also forsee the following problems : 3. How can we adminstrate the AFP server over the backbone/router. Timbuktu may help, I am not sure if it works across AppleTalk router. 4. How can we perform a mass generation of user accounts into the AFP server with the user data store in a pre-defined format (ASCII file). I sincerely hope someone can enlighten us on any of the question above. Pls send me you reply to me as direct if possible. Thans.
