[comp.protocols.appletalk] Need help with phone net install

arsen@erg.sri.com (Tom Arseneault) (11/20/90)

	My previous post was not very informative (blame it on a long day). My net is set up as per a hypercardstack put out by Farallon about phone net. They call it a "BackBone" configuation. This consists of 2 pair twisted pair phone line run between modular phone jacks (RJ11 type) and the computer pluged into that with one of their phone net adapters, Their picture showed at one port a printer dasychained off the cpu adapter. The only mention of terminators are that they should be on the end nodes. The same w

as said about a dasychained setup and the star config (passive) it said to terminate the 4 longest runs out of a max of Six arms. Therefor our net looks like this (before fixing):

	1===========2=========3=========4==========5=========6=========7
	|           |         |         |          |         |         |
	|           |         |         |          |         |         |
     Terminator CPU CPU PRINTER CPU FASTPATH CPU
	                                                               |
	                                                               |
	                                                            Terminator

	Where 1,2,..,7 are RJ11 phone jacks. The problem we have is that node #2 can talk to printer #4 but nodes #3 and #5 can't, They can however talk to the Fastpath #6 and we could print thru the Fastpath to printer #4. At one point I dasychained a CPU right off the printer and it could not talk the printer (see step 1 below). I then pulled the printer/cpu off the main net and terminated both ends of the new small net and I still could not talk to the printer (see step 2 below), but when I pulled one of the t

erminators off of the small net it could print just fine (see step three below). So I reconnected it back to the main net with it terminator and all nodes could print just fine again (see step 4 below).

					Step 4

	So that is how our net looks now, Please keep in mind that this is just a model, our net has three or four CPU nodes and is about 800 to 850 feet long. It runs along the floor boards in the office then up a phone closet to the third floor where it runs in the overhead to Fastpath. Thank you for your help, I will see about getting some tools to help with net maint, but I still need a book, if one is available.
