[comp.protocols.appletalk] IP Subnetting with FastPath 4, K* 8.0

mst@mx.csun.edu (Michael Temkin) (11/21/90)

In the manual (included by Kinetics, I don't know what kind of docs, if any,
Shiva includes) on page 3-20 is what is needed. Below is our setup and
a brief description of what you need to do.

1. Select the ATalk Phases you want (don't forget to set options 17 and/or
    18).

2. Select the K-STAR IP configuration (and any others)

3.  Select option 9.

4. Set the IP information as usual in the IP Information box.

5. Set the IP address of the AppleTalk side of the K-box (this is a
    different subnet from the one in #4) in the Local Parameters'
    Parameter#1 box.

6. Select the number of static and dynamic addresses.

My config follows:

1. Phase 1 and Phase 2. Option 17 set (using as a transition bridge for
    A/UX 2.0)

2.  K-STAR selected

3.  Option 9 selected.

4.  IP Addr = 13.166.1.111
    IP Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
    IP Broadcast = 130.166.1.255
    IP Addr of Default Router = 130.166.1.12

5.  LocalTalk IP Subnet Addr = 130.166.9.1

6.  Dynamic = 20,   Static = 40

MacTCP is setup to do Manual addressing (my preference, I like to know
where people are telnetting from, dynamics give random addr#s.
The router should be set to the AppleTalk IP addr of the K-box (130.166.9.1
in my config). Don't forget to select the correct zone.

That is it. My setup works fine. If you have problems, drop me a note.

Mike.

Below is the configuration steps on page 3-21:

* Click the Reset button, then open the gateway again.
*  Click the Pause button.
* Enter the AppleTalk configuration data; see Chapter 2.
* Turn on Option 9 in the Options window.
* Select K-STAR IP from the Configuration menu and
   double-click on the K-STAR IP listing in the
   Configuration area.
* Enter the IP address of the PathPath Box.
*  Click More.
(page 3-22)
* In the Local Parameters #1 field, type the IP address that
   will be the gateway's address on the new IP network.
* Enter the number of client Macintoshes controlled by the
   gateway.
* Turn on the Remote Boot switch (optional).
*  Download K-STAR.
*  Click the Go button.
* Save the configuration data in a file (optional).

I usually save before I say Go, too many times it has crashed on me...

Good Luck!
