[comp.protocols.appletalk] Locking a Appleshare volume with Cap/Aufs

blu@millipore.com (Brian Utterback) (11/28/90)

We are using RU-cap2, Enet and Aufs to access files on a SparcStation from
our Mac II's. This is working well, but I had a few questions.

The most pressing, is it possible to have a volume be locked, even if it is
owned by the Mac user. The problem is that we have a large database of images
in a certain format on the Sparc. This format has the raw 8-bit images embedded
after a header and we want to access the images using the NIH modified
NCSA Image program, which can import this kind of file. The only potential
problem comes is someone accidentially saves a file. It would overwrite the
existing file and screw up the database. The database protected so that each
user can read and write their own files, so if you log on as a registered user
then you can write those files on the AFPvolume.

I want to make it impossible to overwrite the files just as if the Volume had
a write protect tab. And I don't want to make the volume accessible to guests.
