J O B O P E N I N G July 14, 1983 The Hydromechanics Laboratory at the U. S. Naval Academy has a posi- tion open for a GS-11/12 electronics engineer. The Hydromechanics Lab uses DEC PDP-11 computers (running RSX-11 and RT-11) to control the operation and acquire test data from towing tank tests of ship hull models and ocean structures. The computer control system makes this installation one of the most technically advanced model basins in the world. The position requires knowledge of computer system architec- ture, microprocessors and control and data acquisition interface design and operation. Some experience with software is also desir- able. Current projects involve the upgrade of a laser based telemetry system and microprocessor control of towing carriages and wavemaker systems. Future projects include an Ethernet connection to a local area net- work, upgrade of the PDP-11's to a VAX and the design, specification, and procurement of the laboratory's next generation of computer con- trolled acquisition and analysis systems. Project development is sup- ported by an electronics shop equipped with the latest oscilliscopes, logic analizers, and microprocessor development tools. The laboratory staff is all civilian consisting of four naval archi- tects, one electronics technician, two mechanical technicians, a com- puter specialist (software), and a secretary. The laboratory works closely with the Computer Aided Design and Interactive Graphics Group in developing an integrated facility for designing and testing models. Both the academic and research communities are served by the labora- tory. The job an is a full time civil service position with a salary range of $27K to $38K.
