Just a quick comment and correction. Sun's PCNFS product seems very stable and easy to manage (pcnfsd include with SunOS, great config scripts).. 
Telnet and ftp work very well. Even has some r stuff (rsh, etc). It also has 
an add on mail/backup ultility called Lifeline. I haven't worked much with the 
backup but the mailer may be configured to use SMTP or POP (included).
