Does anyone make a print server for AppleShare fileservers that is better than Apple's current offering? In "AppleTalk Network System Overview", p. 47, Apple states: "The AppleTalk protocol architecture for print spooling is flexible enough to support such spooler services as: o printer access control o user authentication o direct pass-through o queue management Because the spooler/server lies functionally between workstation and printer, it can easily control printer access. This setup also provides an ideal location for user authentication as well as for gathering statistics about printer use. User authentication can occur just after the workstation opens a PAP connection to the spooler/server or printer ...." Apple's current Appleshare PrintServer software does not handle user authentication, nor does it provide statistics on number of pages printed by user, nor does it allow users to remove their own jobs once spooled. (Unless, of course, they have access to the server console.) Are other products available that can do these things? Is Apple itself working on remedies? Jim Bradley, CNR Computer Facility, UC Berkeley
