[net.news.group] Here Comes the SUN???

aoki@trwspp.UUCP (05/24/84)

<munch .unch ..nch ...ch ....h .....>

Hello World :::::

	Is there anyone else out there who is interested in a
    newsgroup named:

	"net.sun" or "net.unix.sun"

    or some such beast. I am not sure where the group should go, but
    this group should be used to discuss problems, solutions, new
    peripherals, software packages, windowing examples, and anything
    else that might come to mind, but dealing with the SUN(tm).

	Comment? Suggestions on a better news group?

net.micro.sun was proposed a while ago and rejected.

The right place to discuss workstations, like the SUN, is net.works.

Like net.digital, maybe we shouldn't start net.micro.sun until a
sufficient amount of discussion is found in net.micro. There hasn't
been very much talk about SUN's at all on the net (except for
advertisements, which, as I recall, were solicited).

Unfortunately, as is increasingly the case, I would be very interested in
a newsgroup on SUNs, but I unsubscribed to net.micro aeons ago because I'm
not all that interested in microcomputers per se. Similarly, net.works is
a poor solution because it's the gatewayed version of the WORKS mailing
list, which should not be in competition with the SUN-SPOTS list (which,
unfortunately, is not gatewayed).

One reason there's not very much talk about SUNs is that there's nowhere to
put it.

Here at the University of Chicago we use SUNs a lot and would be glad
for there to be a related newsgroup. We currently pass stuff around
via mail to a few other known users and try to get hold of SUN-SPOTS
when we can.

I think the best thing would be to gateway arpa's SUN-SPOTS to/from
net.works.sun, or, as a 2nd choice, to create fa.sun-spots.  I believe
(but I could err) that SUN-SPOTS-REQUEST may already be looking into
this.

As for the fact that such a group was already proposed and turned down,
I say: there are lots more SUN users now!

Re: fa.sun-spots

This group already exists (at least we get it here at inmet).
The gate appears to be at cca!daemon (Computer Corporation of America,
Cambridge, MA).

Re: net.works.sun

Lets see some discussion in net.works first (which isn't all that
heavily used).

net.works.apollo was created recently, and has not had
a lot of traffic.

net.micro.sun is NOT a good name for the group!

<Insert standard flame here:>
I would be interested in a SUN newsgroup, and don't particularly
care exactly where it goes. We have about ten more people who
would be interested, too.

BUT!!!!

I don't want to have to wade through all the, uh, stuff in net.micro
to follow the 'initial' discussion , as someone suggested. Sure,
my 'n' key works (or at least the notes equivalent does) but
it still takes a long time to wade through all the 8-bit, uh, stuff.

<end standard newgroup flame>

The word 'stuff' is the most innocuous one I can think of....
