[comp.protocols.appletalk] Why does TRANSCRIPT send three jobs for each file?

u-lchoqu%peruvian.utah.edu@cs.utah.edu (Lee Choquette) (02/20/91)

Why does our NeXT send three jobs to the LaserWriter for every one file we
print? We're running TRANSCRIPT on a NeXT cube running 4.3 BSD UNIX. The
psif.papif appears to be version 1.2.

Every time I send something from the NeXT to the LaserWriter, which is
actually an AppleShare print server pretending to be a LaserWriter, the NeXT
spools three jobs in the AppleShare server's queue. The first and third jobs
don't actually produce any output, but I'm wondering how to turn them off, so
we don't have such long, hard-to-scan queues.

The printcap entries for our LaserWriters specify ``sh'' (suppress header
page), the variables BANNERFIRST and BANNERLAST are both set to zero in the
papif script, and we normally run enscript or lpr with the ``-h'' (suppress
header page) option, but these three things don't seem to be enough to turn
off that first and third print job.

Please respond by E-mail. I'll summarize.
