[comp.protocols.appletalk] Problems with CAP.

wright@hsi.UUCP (Gary Wright) (04/25/88)

I am having problems getting some of the CAP program to work on our system.

We are running 4.3 BSD on a VAX with a Kinetics Fastpath II to talk to a
single MAC on the AppleTalk network. CAP is version 4.0 with patches
5,6,7 and bugs 1-15 applied. KIP is the 9/87 version.

My atalkatab looks like:

02.00	N3	1.0.0.0 COMPSERV	#main ethernet
01.00	KC	1.0.0.8 COMPSERV	#K-box in bullpen
	I1.255.255.255	I1.0.0.2 #ipbroad ipname
	I1.0.0.2	I1.0.0.2 #ipdebug ipfile
	L0 L0 L0 L0	S0 S0 #ipother unused unused
	LX0 S4	S2 #flags ipstatic ipdynamic
	S01.00	S02.00	"COMPSERV" #atneta atnete zonea

and atalk.local:

# mynet mynode myzone
02.00 2 COMPSERV
# bridgenet bridgenode bridgeIP
02.00 220 1.0.0.8

Our lan runs as a Class A network with no subnetting since we don't
talk to anyone and have only a single physical ethernet cable. I was
using a broadcast of 1.0.0.0 changed that to 1.255.255.255 (and the
appropriate atalkatab entries) and still
have the same problems.

I have had lwsrv up and running for about two months now with no problems.
I did notice that when I first installed CAP, look didn't report finding
any entities on the AppleTalk net:

abInit: [ddp: net 2.00, node 2] starting
	Looking for =:=@* ...

I put this on ignore for a while since all we needed was lwsrv which was
working fine.

I have now come back to the problem since I am trying to install the
network dump programs from Dan Tappan. I am able to get the dump
daemon on the Mac to find the restore daemon (macrestore) on the VAX.
I can't get macdump to find =:DUMPDEV@* on the Mac. Also, atis shows
macrestore as being registered but /etc/look (and looks and pinger)
can't find any entities.

Running atis with debugging on (-dn) I get:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
atis: Reply num max for lkup reply is 5 (based on 101)
atis: pid = 61
atis: Got nbp 0 lkup from net 2.0, node 2, skt 130

atis: Got nbp 1 lkup from net 1.0, node 64, skt 254

atis: Answering lookup with 2 entities

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The kip install documentation isn't clear:
Just type in the appletalk net number for the UNIX's ether cable as the
first number. The second number will be the low byte of the host's IP
address. The third field is the local zone name. On the second
(noncomment) line we give the address for the 'closest' kbox. The
first and second numbers are the anet and node number. The third
number is the IP address of the kbox. (This can be a IP host name as

The first number should be the kbox's "anete" network number.
The second number is its node number and since we are using

We have been using Dan Tappan's Macintosh dump program for a few months
here successfully but have recently installed the new 6.0 System on the
mac--the dump program has not worked since. There seems to be a
problem with the dumper program on the Mac. At boot time the dumper
icon appears in the lower left corner and then the message:

	Dumper
MPP driver not found

appears in large letters at the bottom of the screen. The message goes
away and the Mac continues booting as usual. Can anyone explain to me
what is going on and what I may be doing wrong? I would have sent this
directly to Dan but I can't find his email address. (Dan are you out
there?)

Along with the new 6.0 system, came the Appleshare client code as has
been noted previously in this newsgroup. I was able to log on to the
server and get the remote volumes to show up on the desktop but I was
unable to write to any of the remote volumes. The permissions seemed
to be set for write access but any writes to the remote volume failed.
What am I doing wrong? Here is what the volume looks like on the UNIX side:

drwxr-xr-x 5 wright compserv 512 Jul 12 18:24 ./

drwxr-xr-x 4 wright compserv 512 Jul 12 18:25 Empty Folder/

As you can see, I was able to create an empty folder.

Any help with either of these two problems would be appreciated.

To all,

We're running CAP on an IBM RT and need some advice on the following
problem.

When Mac users connect to their RT server directory, then open a document
residing on the RT into MS Word v4.0 on their Mac, all seems to be well.
When they edit the file, for example run the spell checker and make
various changes, all seems well, but when they use Word to save the edited
version of the file back to the server, the process of saving the file to
disk corrupts the file (severely). Additionally, in situations like this,
Word will sometimes "Unexpectedly quit"--which also results in a damaged
file.

On the other hand, we can copy files (drag them) to/from the server to the
local hard drive w/ no problems.

Also, what IS the most curent version of CAP?

Chas.
