[comp.protocols.appletalk] NEED HELP- memory upgrade for a Franklin [Apple2] computer

jsosa@encore.com (Joe Sosa) (02/23/91)

I, actually my father, has a Franklin Ace 1000 computer which he got
early in the 80's. The Franklin is almost entirely Apple 2 compatible.
I guess that's why they got sued by Apple and I think are out of business.

Anyways, the computer has only 64k memory, and he would like to have
more!! primarily through a memory card if possible.

I've tried to look for a place that has Franklin or Apple2 expanable
memory cards, but could not find any.

If anyone out there can help me with this, please do and mail me.

Well, what you're looking for is somewhat of a rarity nowadays. The Franklin
hasn't been made for the last (checking watch) seven or so years, and its
architecture was basically that of the Apple ][+. So, in order to add
memory, I think your best bet would be to check some used computer hardware
dealers. Applied Engineering had a card (I think they still make it) called
RamWorks which, if I remember correctly, is a slot 1-7 memory board. Give
them a call and see if they still make it. Their phone number is
214/241-6060.

Good luck!

Franklin Ace 1000s are actually copies of Apple ][+ with minor alterations

(Big companies and their BIG lawers)

There are planty of RAM cards available for the ][+ (RAM Factor by AE,
and a bunch of other Clone Satern RAM cards). The only problem is that
not many software will recognize and use the extra RAM. The most you can
hope for is to use the extra RAM as a RAM disk.

There are many mail order house that sells Clone Satern RAM cards (dubbed
as "128k RAM card") as well as AE's RAM Factors.

Yes, the RamWorks III is still in production, but it won't work in a
Franklin. It only fits the auxiliary slot of a IIe. Applied
Engineering does make another card, though. It's called RamFactor and
will fit in any slot. The card itself can hold up to 1 meg; a 4-meg
piggyback and a battery-backup system are also available for the
RamFactor.
