[comp.protocols.appletalk] NCSA Telnet/MS Windows 386 enhanced mode difficulties

cook-robert@CS.YALE.EDU (Robert Cook) (03/01/91)

I have been trying to get my PC to use NCSA Telnet (or any appletalk network
application) while operating under MS Windows 386 enhanced mode. If I drop
into a dos virtual machine, try to load my drivers, and then try to run
NCSA Telnet, for instance, I get an "Error getting network number" or some
such. I've gotten Telnet to work without Windows, and in Windows Standard
mode.

Some important facts:

I'm using a TOPS flashcard, attached to an Appletalk network.
I've tried loading the network drivers prior to running windows, to no avail.
Quickmail PC, like Telnet, works without windows and in standard mode, but not
	in 386 enhanced mode.
I pulled out my RAM chips, arranged them in a pentagram on my floor, and
sacrificed a chicken, also to no avail.

Does anybody have an idea what's going on here? Do I need other drivers?
(mine are pretty up-to-date). Is this one of those well-known problems
that is left unsovled only to embarrass people ignorant enough to ask
about it?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions you might have.
