Why does our NeXT send three jobs to the LaserWriter for every
one file we print? We're running TRANSCRIPT on a NeXT cube
running 4.3 BSD UNIX. The psif.papif appears to be version
1.2.
Sak Wathanasin replied:
That's just the way TS works. The first job is to make sure
that the printer's there, then it sends the job, then it sends
accounting stuff. They must have had problems with lockups on
their serial line.
Earlier versions of TS were even more anti-social: they
assumed that the printer was online, and hung around waiting
for a response before moving on to the next phase.
Dan Lanciani responded:
If I recall correctly, it is doing page accounting by sending
jobs to return the pagecount before and after each job.
