Recently I posted an erroneous message on using different programs for Telnet/FTP capabilities on PCs linked to an AppleTalk network using LocalTalk cards, with a bridge from the AppleTalk network to the backbone. I have received several enquiries about my posting, so let me repost what I think is correct information here. There are three packages I have tried that allow Telnet/FTP use as described. NCSA Telnet 2.3beta14 from zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu has a built in support for appletalk. However, it currently supports only dynamic IP addressing, not static addressing. I found it relatively simple to install. NCSA Telnet 2.2TN modified at Clarkson and then at Princeton is similar to the version above. It also only supports dynamic IP addressing, but the author indicates he will look into adding a static addressing option. If static addressing is required, I found only the KA9Q/LOCALTLK.COM combi- nation currently able to do this correctly. However, the interface for KA9Q is not as easy to use as NCSA Telnet packages. Here's where I found each package: NCSA Telnet 2.3beta14: zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu /NCSA_Telnet/PC.2.3beta/ tel23bin.zip NCSA Telnet 2.3TN/Clarkson/Princeton: princeton.edu /pub/pc3270.tar.Z KA9Q package + LocalTalk packet driver: ucdavis.ucdavis.edu /dist/packet/local.zip and /dist/packet/netpkt.zip
