[comp.protocols.appletalk] Problem with running LocalTalk on Mac SE/030 and A/UX v1.1.1

dmanning@ecs.umass.edu (Dave Manning) (03/22/91)

I am having problems getting Appletalk installed and running on my
machine. At the present time, I am using AU/X v1.1.1 on a Mac SE/030; I
plan on purchasing an upgrade kit to v2.0.1 in the future when money is not
so tight. I have used AppleTalk to do a number of useful things when I was
running MacOS and would like to continue using them under A/UX:

        - access an HP DeskJet and Imagewriter using localtalk.
        - use VersTerm Pro 3.5 to conduct TCP/IP transactions on LocalTalk
into a Sun SPARC equipped with TOPS and a Cayman GatorBox.
Have used telnet and ftp into/from the sun.

To date, we have tried everything that is suggested in the manual
related to starting appletalk and have had no luck. Help, suggestions and
wisdow would be deep appreciated! Here is a summary of what has transpired:

[1] Installation:

A new kernel was built using /etc/newunix with the [localtalk] option
and [nonet] option. We nonet because we wanted to be sure that there was
little chance of some contention between ethernet stuff and appletalk stuff.
Note: There is no ethernet option installed in my SE/030.

/etc/inittab was modified so that the at0 process would spawn once. NFS
client and server daemons were all turned off. getty was turned of for tty0
and tty1 for good measure. tty1=serial-ptr-port AND appletalk port.

The system was then brought up cold with the new kernel and the new
inittab. Midway through the boot, an error message appeared from daemon
lo0 reporting that a file could not be found. Towards the end of the boot,
just before getting the a/ux login screen, an error from NBPD (the appletalk
name binding protocol) occured indicated: File or Directory not found.

[2] Attempts to correct the problem:

After starting the system and observing what happened in [1], I tried to
look for signs of life from localtalk. There were none! The file
/etc/appletalkrc did not exist and neither did the socket /dev/appletalk.
I went back into /etc/inittab with the editor and set the at0 process from
'once' to 'respawn'. Then I did an init Q. The screen filled with the error
message:

NBPD: File or directory not found.

This was followed by a message from the kernel indicating that at0 had been
terminated because it was respawning too rapidly. I went back into inittab
and set at0 back to once. I again checked to see if /etc/appletalkrc and
/dev/appletalk were there; they were not.

[3] We installed A/UX onto a 105 MB disk this weekend. Everything that I
would expect to encounter on a unix system is there! Apple and my authorized
dealer have been of little help.
