[comp.protocols.appletalk] Does CAP support K-star?

ted@kadabra.mitre.org (Ted Ede) (03/27/91)

I'm trying to get CAP6.0 running on a sparc-2 with sunos 4.1.1. We
have a large appletalk with > 150 zones and a dozen or two cisco
routers. We have mainly FastPath 4s running K-Star 8.1.1 (beta).

Q: does CAP support K-Star and KIP or just KIP?

I built 6.0 with the three official patches using the default IPtalk
config. After configuring, making includes, libs, and programs I
tried atlook with no success to talk to an fp4 on the same ether as me.

Here's the output:
% ./atlook -dldapisn
abInit: [ddp: 0.13, 18] starting
debugging LAP
debugging DDP
debugging ATP
debugging PAP
debugging INI
debugging ASP

My atalk.local looks like:
13 18 K-Building
13 235 129.83.9.235

Q: The appletalk zone behind the fastpath (with the lw that I want to
get to) is "G033 2K100 Wing" and it is net number 11. The K-Building
ethernet is net number 13. I assumed that since I was on the ether, I
should use net 13. Correct?

Q: what prevents anyone else from dynamically allocating node number 18?

Q: does atis have to run just to use atlook? doc/install.ms says no.
CAP(8) says yes. which is correct?

I then tried using the ethertalk version. After building it, I deleted
atalk.local (didn't want any wrong defaults) and ran aarpd and low and
behold it gave me this etalk.local:

#
# EtherTalk dynamic configuration data
#
# Last update: Tue Mar 26 19:20:34 1991
#
# Generated by native EtherTalk (Phase 1)
#
interface "le0"
thisNet 0.13
thisNode 4
thisZone "K-Building"
bridgeNet 0.13
bridgeNode 128
bridgeIP 0.0.0.0
nisNet 0.13
nisNode 4
asyncNet 0.00
asyncZone ""

After running atis, atlook now works, and I discover that node 128 is
our cisco router. And yes! I can get to my printer.

Q: should I punch in the IP address for the router in this file or
does it matter?

General comments:

I'd like to use IPtalk and run CAP on other platforms. What was I
doing wrong ?

I think the install procedure is well crafted, but how about making it
easier to specify install destinations? editing m4.setup after each
Configure is cumbersome.

The install.ms file could be embellished a bit to include more info
about setting up atalk.local.

any help would be greatly appreciated,
ted
