[comp.protocols.appletalk] Macintosh -> UNIX printing?

bin@primate.wisc.edu (Brain in Neutral) (03/28/91)

GatorPrint allows UNIX processes to spool files to LaserWriters on
LocalTalk networks. What would be involved in creating a fake
spooler for Macintoshes that could appear in the Chooser and would
take LaserWriter output and shove it through the GatorBox to a
waiting UNIX host? The UNIX host could then send the output back
to the printer.

This would involve double traffic through the GatorBox, but the
advantage is that you would not have to do any spooling on the
Macintosh:
	(i) no need to take up local disk storage for the spool files
(ii) no delays in processing during printing, such as PrintMonitor
	produces

Or, you could attach the printer to the UNIX host, in effect producing
Macintosh -> UNIX printing, which can't (I think?) be done with GatorPrint.

CAP (version 5.0, at least) contains a sample application called LWSRV. It
is a UNIX process that looks to an Appletalk network like a laserwriter. I
haven't used it myself, but it sounds like it might do what you want, in
particular if you have the LW connected to one of the UNIX system's serial
ports.

This all assumes the use of CAP, which implies KIP or local equivalent.

I believe that there is a component of the CAP public domain software
called lwsrv that will do this. Also, several commercial products exist
that provide this functionality as well. I believe that Helios, IPT, Mt.
Xinu as well as my company Pacer Software offer products that will both
masquerade as a LaserWriter in Chooser and drive a LaserWriter either on
the LocalTalk or serially connected to a UNIX system. Our product is
called PacerPrint. If you want more information on our products call
either 508-898-3300 or 619-454-0565 and ask for Sales.
