[comp.protocols.appletalk] Communications toolbox access via Appletalk

jf@ap.co.umist.ac.uk (John Forrest) (04/09/91)

The basic situation, we have some macs which have yet to be connected to the
Localtalk network - I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but some of them
might be delayed in doing so due to logistics. Pending real connections, I'm
looking around for what else I can do. I've managed to get the AsyncAppletalk
package working via our Webster Multipath Gateway and our Apollos with CAP6.0.
However, I'm looking around for some way for terminal/mail access. My initial
feeling was to get MacTCP working, but this had drawn a blank - the Webster
was getting TCP packets wrapped in Appletalk packets wrapped in UDP packets,
and obviously the code has not been written with this in mind (!). I expect
that if the packets were delivered to the Webster as Appletalk, it would
respond, but that would mean getting ethertalk/uab working on our apollos, and
I can't even work out how to directly access the ethernet or register a
manager for an alternative protocol.

Anyway, that led to a search for alternatives. One of these was to thing about
using the communications toolbox. Does anyone have a CTB tool that actually
accesses a remote machine via Appletalk. If so one could write a server for
the Unix end that did a telnet access - which would provide the functionality
required. I'm reasonably happy to write Unix code, but have no experience of
Mac programming.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
