[comp.protocols.appletalk] cap6.0 with appletalk on ethernet works, but async on serial doesn't

I have a Mac II connect to a sun 4.1 via ethernet and serial lines and UAB.
Running lwsrv and aufs provides the appropriate devices using the ethernet
connection. Good. The ethernet setup works.

Using the asynchronous network device in the control panel I can log into
the sun on the serial line and run async. Then the window closes as it
should. The chooser displays two zones - the ethernet zone and the
asynchronous zone and it is getting this information from uab. So that part
works fine. What does not work is that when I choose the asynchronous zone
(actually the chooser has highlighted this for me) there is nothing in it -
no printer or server.

Did I forget something? Is something not set up right? It's pretty close
since everything is OK for the ethernet setup, and uab is good enough on
the asynchronous line to at least tell the Mac what zones there are?

Any suggestion are much appreciated.
