The Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois
is seeking up to six Assistant Professors in Software and other
areas of Computer Science. This is a first step in a plan which
will considerably expand the Department, its facilities and its
work space in the years to come. The Department is offering a
very competitive salary and promotion prospects are good provided
that the standards of excellence required by the Department are
met.
The working environment includes a network of nine VAXs running
Berkeley UNIX and a rapidly increasing number of MC68000 UNIX
based systems (some are SUN derivatives). Text processing is
supported by laser printers. Graphics equipment includes two so-
phisticated RAMTEK graphics processors; one connected to a VAX
and the other to a M68000 based machine. In addition, a Dolphin
and various workstations are used to support Artificial Intelli-
gence research. Additional equipment is being purchased this
year as part of the NSF funded CER program.
There are many exciting research projects in most areas of Com-
puter Science. For example, the Laboratory for Advanced Super-
computers is building a large multiprocessor and the Software
Research Group are designing an environment to support software
development projects based on using a distributed system (UNIX
United) composed of networked workstations.
The University has a large and independent Computing Services Or-
ganization that provides Cyber and IBM based computer services
and Campus-wide networking facilities. In addition to this ser-
vice, the University hopes to purchase a supercomputer to support
research. Starting next year, it is planned to start replacing
the existing Campus telephone exchange with a digital exchange
that will also support computer access and networks.
