[comp.protocols.appletalk] Locked files, NFS & SunOS 4.1.1

M.Morrissey@cs.ucl.ac.uk (06/06/91)

This might be a bit out of date, but I seem to remember some discussion about
files being reported as locked by Aufs when accessing an NFS mounted
filestore under SunOS 4.0.3 and SunOS 4.1.1. Several people suggested that
the only solution was to turn off the CAP file locking. This wasn't our
experience, so I thought I have my say.

We had compiled CAP 5.0 that we got with out Multiport Gateway under SunOS
4.0.3 and it worked fine. When we had to attach some new disks to an IPC
running 4.1 our problems started. Files would be reported as locked when
anything (reading, writing, Finder copying) was tried. The problem was that
the lockf() calls were returning EACCES. An upgrade to SunOS 4.1.1 didn't
solve the problem, well it did, but the file locks would reappear. If Aufs
was run on the machine with the disks attached then there were no problems.
The problems occurred when accessing NFS mounted disks from a SunOS 4.1
system.

I then saw mention of the NFS jumbo patch the Sun had released (100173-01).
This was applied to both the NFS server and the client that runs Aufs, and
so far everything is fine. Of course, saying things like that is the one
sure way of really buggering things up :-)

Anyway, our experience has been that file locking does work correctly with
Aufs and NFS mounted filestores. Using SunOS 4.0.3 with CAP 5.0 worked fine,
as does SunOS 4.1.1 with the NFS patch using CAP 5.0. It also appears that
CAP 6.0 with patches 1 to 25 applied, works fine as well on SunOS 4.1.1. This
is worth getting hold off, especially if you've got an ethernet card in your
Mac. That native EtherTalk phase 2 for SunOS is great !
