[comp.protocols.appletalk] Bridging Appletalk zones

dwsmith@loki.arc.NASA.GOV (David Smith) (06/21/91)

We need to bridge some appletalk zones (via modems) and I heard that a box
put out by Shiva called a telebridge will do just that. Now comes the
questions:

1) How does one initially setup the connection from one zone to another
remote zone? Can anyone on the appletalk network indicate what number
    to dial?

2) Can multiple modems be connected to a TeleBridge to provide more paths
into a single zone? Or are multiple Telebridges needed?

3) Not that it should matter, but has anyone had any problems with the
    Telebridge and System 7?

4) What other information can any of you provide in regards to bridging
appletalk zones via modems? Other products available other than
    Shiva's Telebridge?

Thank you,

David
We are using several Shiva telebridges at the University of Sydney to
bridge appletalk using leased lines. In answer to your questions,

  >1) How does one initially setup the connection from one zone to another

  > to dial?

There is a network manager application which is used to configure the
TeleBridge, by controlling who has this you can control who has the
ability to configure the TeleBridge, you can also protect the
configuration with a password.
To get the TeleBridge to dial out you need an init/cdev by restricting
this you can control who can connect to remote sites.
Once the connection is made anybody who is on your network can see and
use the network on the other side.

  >2) Can multiple modems be connected to a TeleBridge to provide more paths
  > into a single zone? Or are multiple Telebridges needed?

No you can only have one TeleBridge connection between two networks
using one modem at each end. If you want more bandwidth you should get
a faster modem.
BTW: Do not use TrailBlazers, the line turn around time is too long for
the sort of traffic that appletalk generates.

  >3) Not that it should matter, but has anyone had any problems with the
  > Telebridge and System 7?

Dont Know, I have not tried it.

***FLAME ON***

There is a bug in the firmware of the TeleBridge. The TeleBridge does
not pass tickle packets from file servers to clients or vice-versa.
This does not cause a problem on appleshare servers or clients as the
packets are ignored but CAP/aufs follows the protocol specification
faithfully and times the connection out after two minutes. The local
distributor here in Australia has been very helpful but Shiva tech
support is pathetic. Convincing them that there was a problem was a
trial involving faxing pages of inside appletalk across the pacific.
They then acnowledged that there was a problem and said that they would
send out some new ROM's and software. That was at the begining of
April, I am still waiting, presumably the turkeys sent it by sea mail.
Apart from this they work well.

***FLAME OFF***

There are also boxes that have the modem built in such as the Shiva
NetModem, this is cheaper than buying a TeleBridge and modem combination
but the modem speeds are not all that high (9600 bps) while the
telebridge can go to 57,600 bps.
Solana also make a similar product called the R-Server (?)
