O.K. Here is one from a complete amateur. Unless you enjoy holding the hand of a MacIgnorant, press 'n' now. Here's my goal. I have a Sun 4/330 (SunOS 4.1.1) serving a mostly PC-client TCP/IP ethernet LAN. I have a Mac IIcx with an ethernet card. I'd like the Mac to mount directories on the Sun as local volumes. Print service would be nice too but that can wait. Note that I have no AppleTalk-Ethernet gateway in the picture or in my plans. I am using MacTCP and EtherTalk Phase II on the IIcx to successfully run Stanford's SU-MAC/IP package. I have compiled and installed CAP 6.0 + all 27 patches. There were no complaints during the process (amazing!) and I was careful to choose the Phase II ethernet support option. Now here's where I lose it. I start the three daemons aarpd, atis and aufs (in that order) as follows: casbs# aarpd le0 casbs (casbs is the name of the Sun server) (15 second pause but no output) casbs# atis abInit: [ddp: 255.00, 225] starting 11:26:23 06/25/91 Reply num max for lkup reply is 5 (based on 104) casbs# aufs (no output) NOTE: I have no idea what I am doing with these daemons and in particular I do not know what arguments I should be giving them. Next I walk over to the Mac and select AppleShare in the Chooser. The Sun server comes up as a possible server so I select it then click O.K. I then get an alert box saying, "An AppleShare system error occurred. Server not responding. If I then walk back over to the Sun and look for the aufs process, it has diasappeared. Sorry this is so basic, but any pointers as to how to get this thing off the ground would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, patrick -- R.
