Hi Folks, At the University of Rochester we are contemplating migrating our AppleTalk internet over to AppleTalk Phase 2. We have approx. 25 FastPaths and 10 GatorBoxes. We have 5-10 CAP servers (the Computing Center does not administer more than 3 currently but there are other departments who use CAP) and we administer our FastPaths using the AppleTalk Administrative Deamon (atalkad). We have two groups on our internet who are already using Phase 2 (so they can run DEC PathWorks for Mac). If you have experience moving such a large internet over to Phase 2, we would like to hear from you. We are most concerned about Columbia AppleTalk Protocol (CAP), Atalkad, Unix AppleTalk Bridge (UAB), and Native EtherTalk for UNIX (NEU). Is there a Phase 2 flavor of IPTalk (AppleTalk in IP)? Does (or will) atalkad work in a Phase 2-only environment? Does CAP care if its host is speaking AppleTalk Phase 1 or Phase 2? Is it true that UAB and NEU allow hosts to speak EtherTalk Phase 2? On which UNIX CPUs can UAB and NEU be run? Can we still maintain our GatorBox IPTalk connection over the Internet to the Wide Area AppleTalk Network (WAAN)? Does transition routing (Phase 1 AND Phase 2) slow routers down significantly? What other products are still not Phase 2 compatible? Do you have a mixed vendor environment (FastPath-4 and GatorBox-classic) ? If so, did can you elaborate on problems related to this mix ? Like the fact that tunneling with GatorBoxes is strictly from between those boxes so how do we interconnect a mixture ? If you have moved a large AppleTalk internet over to Phase 2, we would like to hear your strategies. Please tell us of your successes AND failures. Thanks so much, Tim D'Ascoli University of Rochester UCC Networking Group timd@cc.rochester.edu
